Holiday Feeling Lasts All Year Round with Concrete
In his holiday home at Omaha north of Auckland, GJ Gardiner franchise owner Steve Bull has created the perfect environment for relaxing outdoors.
Embracing the trend for easy-care, contemporary surfaces; Steve has used Firth's exposed aggregate polished concrete for his home both inside and out. Exactly the same flooring treatment in both areas creates a seamless flow, so that it becomes one large, open yet versatile space.
Bi-fold doors on both sides of his living area open to a choice of alfresco dining spaces. They were designed so Steve's family and guests can escape the wind, no matter which direction it comes from.
Steve says he likes the smooth feel of the concrete on his feet - and he appreciates the fact it's very easy to keep clean.
In cooler weather, underfloor heating inside keeps the living area toasty underfoot and a fire is a cosy drawcard outdoors. Concrete also provides a thermal mass, releasing the heat stored from the sun during the day. This creates a warm ambience so Steve can entertain his visitors outdoors all evening, without having to break up the party to move indoors when the temperature drops.
Concrete's durability gives further advantages over alternative flooring - including surfaces such as timber decking, which can start looking shabby and in need of replacement after several years.
With concrete, Steve can look forward to many more holidays in Omaha without having to spend time on maintenance.
"We chose the concrete for its look and feel, but the permanent, low-maintenance aspect is definitely a big factor in its favour," he says. "It's just a great outdoor area that works really well."
